Danvers is a village in McLean County, Illinois, located within the Bloomington-Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. Originally laid out as Concord on February 20, 1836, by Israel W. Hall and Matthew Robb, the town was named after Concord, Massachusetts. The name was changed to Danvers in 1861, taking its new identity from Danvers in Essex County, Massachusetts, because Illinois at that time had no regulations preventing duplicate town names. A rival settlement called Wilkesborough was established just over a mile to the east the same year, but Concord eventually proved the more successful community, and Wilkesborough had completely vanished by the late 1870s. The town's growth was initially slow, with the first building erected in 1837 and the first actual resident arriving shortly after. Danvers was incorporated as a village in 1869, the same year the first railroad arrived, celebrated with a public picnic featuring chicken, oysters, and coffee. An electric interurban railroad began service in 1907 and operated until 1953. The population grew from 356 in 1870 to over 1,100 by 2000, with much of this growth occurring in the latter half of the twentieth century as people chose the village as a residential base while working in nearby Bloomington-Normal or Peoria. The 2020 census recorded a population of 1,089.
