Dalton is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, situated as a transition between the urban and rural portions of the county. With a population of 6,330 at the 2020 census, it is part of the Pittsfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled in 1755 on former Equivalent Lands and officially incorporated in 1784, taking its name from Tristram Dalton, who served as Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives at the time of incorporation.
Dalton's character was shaped by its early development as a rural-industrial community, with mills established along the East Branch of the Housatonic River and farmland scattered throughout. In 1801, Zenas Crane, Henry Wiswall, and John Willard founded a paper mill that would transform the town's economy. By 1844, the operation had begun producing banknote paper for banks as far away as Boston. Crane & Co. remains the town's largest employer and has held the distinction since 1873 of being the sole supplier of paper for Federal Reserve Notes, the currency of the United States.
The town sits at the junction of Massachusetts Routes 8, 8A, and 9, positioned five miles northeast of downtown Pittsfield. Much of Dalton's landscape is dominated by the Berkshires, with the Appalachian Trail winding through town between Tully and North Mountains. The town center developed around the valley of the East Branch of the Housatonic River, where waterfalls at Wahconah Falls Brook attract visitors to a small state park. In 1973, Dalton hosted the International Six Days Enduro, a prestigious motorcycle competition known as the Olympics of Motorcycling.
