Crandon is a city in Forest County, Wisconsin, located in the northeastern part of the state, approximately one hundred miles north of Green Bay. As the county seat and the only incorporated community in Forest County, Crandon serves as an important hub for the region. The 2020 census recorded a population of 1,713 residents.
The city's origins trace to the 1880s when entrepreneur Samuel Shaw purchased property in the area and, with assistance from Major Frank P. Crandon of the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company, successfully petitioned the Wisconsin Legislature to establish Forest County in 1887. The city itself was named in honor of Frank Crandon. Rail service via the Soo Line Railroad arrived shortly after, though a direct spur line did not reach the town until around 1900.
Lumber became central to Crandon's early development. In 1891, Page and Landeck Lumber Company purchased hardwood timberlands nearby, and by 1902 they had constructed a large sawmill near Clear Lake on Crandon's north side. The mill was later named the Keith & Hiles Lumber Mill. This industrial growth attracted settlers and loggers from Kentucky, whose presence shaped the community's cultural heritage. The city was officially incorporated in 1909 following the construction of the county courthouse, with much of the town's building stock dating from this period.
Though timber industry importance has declined across the region, logging operations continue near the Nicolet National Forest today. Crandon sits on the northern shore of Metonga Lake, with Lake Lucerne also located nearby.
