Coventry is a town in Kent County, Rhode Island, with a population of 35,688 according to the 2020 census. Located in the Pawtuxet River Valley, Coventry spans 62.3 square miles, making it the largest town by land area in Rhode Island. English colonists first settled the area in the early 18th century when it was part of Warwick. By 1741, about one hundred farming families had established themselves in the region and successfully petitioned the Rhode Island General Assembly to create their own town, which they named after the English city of Coventry. The town remained primarily agricultural throughout the 18th century, with notable historic buildings including the Waterman Tavern and the Nathanael Greene Homestead still standing today. Greene, a Coventry resident, became a leading general during the Revolutionary War, eventually rising to second in command under George Washington. The Industrial Revolution transformed eastern Coventry in the 19th century, with mills established in villages like Anthony, Washington, and Harris. This industrial growth attracted French Canadian and Irish immigrants seeking factory work, fundamentally changing the town's demographics and culture. By the 20th century, however, most factories had closed as industry declined.
