Corbin is a home rule-class city located in Whitley, Knox, and Laurel counties in southeastern Kentucky, situated strategically along Interstate 75 and U.S. Route 25W roughly halfway between Knoxville, Tennessee, and Lexington, Kentucky. According to the 2020 census, Corbin has a population of 7,856 residents.
The area's first settlement was called Lynn Camp Station, but the community's founding is credited to Nelson Cummins. When the original post office name of Cummins proved to be a duplicate, postmaster James Eaton selected Corbin as an alternative, naming it after Rev. James Corbin Floyd, a local minister. The town was officially incorporated in 1905. Corbin has acknowledged a difficult chapter in its past, including a 1919 race riot that forced nearly two hundred black residents from the community and a sundown town policy that persisted into the late twentieth century. In October 2019, city leaders marked the centennial of the riot with a proclamation recognizing both this tragic event and the former policy.
Situated in the Cumberland Plateau region of Appalachia, Corbin experiences a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. The area is notable for its proximity to the Pine Mountain Overthrust Fault, a geologic fault system several miles east that has produced occasional tremors, most recently in 2008. The city covers approximately 7.9 square miles and lies in a region where mountains moderate the local climate, making it an accessible hub for the surrounding area.
