Comstock is a small village located in Custer County, Nebraska. Established in 1899 as a water stop along a newly constructed railroad line, the village was named after W. H. Comstock, a local storekeeper. The village covers a total area of 0.35 square miles and has experienced gradual population changes over the past two decades. According to the 2020 census, Comstock had 68 residents, a decline from the 93 people counted in 2010 and the 110 residents recorded in 2000.
The community has maintained its character through several local institutions and attractions. Comstock contains a recreational park, garden, and an active church that serve the village. Of particular historical note is the Dowse Sod House, located southwest of Comstock, which stands as a reminder of the region's pioneer heritage. Between 2000 and 2008, the village gained wider recognition when it hosted the annual Comstock Music Festivals at the 2nd Wind Ranch north of town. The event drew significant attention, eventually attracting over 50,000 attendees during its four-day concert series at its peak. However, financial pressures and a change in ownership led to the indefinite cessation of the festival in 2008.
