Colrain is a town in Franklin County in the hills of northwestern Massachusetts, part of the Springfield metropolitan area. With a population of 1,606 at the 2020 census, it is the second-largest town by area in the county, encompassing 43.4 square miles of landscape shaped by rivers and forests.
First settled in 1735 as Boston Township No. 2, Colrain was organized as an independent town in 1745 and officially incorporated on June 30, 1761. The town's name is said to honor Lord Coleraine, an Irish peer, though the spelling wavered for over a century until Massachusetts standardized it to Colrain in 1873. Nine historic villages dot the landscape: Elm Grove, Lyonsville, Foundry Village, Shattuckville, Griswoldville, Colrain City, Catamount Hill, Stewartville, and Gimletville.
Colrain holds a distinctive place in American history. In May 1812, it became the first town in the United States to fly the flag over a public schoolhouse, a schoolhouse located in the hilltop village of Catamount. During King George's War, the town was home to four fortified garrison houses that protected settlers from Indian attacks, with garrisons maintained again during the Seven Years' War until 1763.
Today, Colrain's town center, located at the base of Chandler Hill, remains remarkably unchanged over the last 150 years and was declared a historic district in 2006. The town is traversed by Massachusetts Route 112, a popular route for ski traffic headed to Vermont, and sits nine miles northwest of Greenfield.
