Coleridge is a small village in Cedar County, Nebraska, with a population of 537 residents according to the 2020 census. The town was platted in 1883 when the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway extended its line to the area. It was named after Lord John Coleridge, the Lord Chief Justice of England, who was visiting the United States at that time. The village's founding came about when a landowner named Norris and the railway company failed to reach agreement on a right of way through his property. As a result, the railroad was built two miles west of Norris instead, and lots began selling in what would become Coleridge, located approximately three miles west and one mile north of Norris. By early 1885, many businesses from the original town of Norris had relocated to Coleridge, though the Norris Cemetery remains outside of Coleridge to this day. Over the years, Coleridge has faced significant natural disasters. On June 23, 2003, an F4 tornado struck the area, damaging or destroying several homes and farms and resulting in one fatality. Nearly eleven years later, on June 17, 2014, a strong EF3 tornado clipped the edge of town, destroying farm buildings and sweeping away a scoreboard and bleachers, though fortunately no one was killed in that event.
