Cloverdale is a small village located in Perry Township, Putnam County, Ohio. With a population of 170 residents at the 2020 census, it represents a quiet corner of northwest Ohio with deep historical roots. Originally known as Evansville, the village was platted in 1877 when railroad expansion reached the area. The community adopted its present name, most likely derived from the Clover Leaf Railroad that passed through a nearby junction, and was officially incorporated as Cloverdale in 1902. In November 2013, Cloverdale experienced significant hardship when an EF-2 tornado struck the southern end of the village. The storm caused minor to moderate structural damage throughout the area, downing many trees and power lines. A local church sustained extensive damage to its walls and roof, and a nearby home lost an entire wall to the storm's force. Despite this natural disaster and the gradual population changes typical of small rural villages over recent decades, Cloverdale continues as an established settlement in Putnam County with a character shaped by its railroad heritage and close-knit community ties.
