Clifton Park is a suburban town in Saratoga County, New York, and the largest municipality in the county with a 2020 population of 38,029. Located approximately 12 miles north of Albany and 10 miles south of Saratoga Springs, the town's name derives from an early land patent granted in 1707 when Nanning Harmansen requested letters patent for land he had purchased from Indigenous Americans, requesting the patent be known as "Cliftons Park." The Indigenous Mohawks and Mohicans had long called the area Canastigione, meaning corn flats, while the Iroquois name for the patent was Shenendehowa, meaning Great Plains. The town was originally separated from Halfmoon and formally established as Clifton Park in 1829, making it the last town created in Saratoga County. Early development included the Vischer Ferry crossing, established in 1783 across the Mohawk River, and the community of Rexford Flats to the northwest. Originally farmland with a small village along what is now U.S. Route 9, Clifton Park experienced significant demographic change with the construction of Interstate 87 through the town in 1961. Today, the town covers 50.2 square miles and serves as a regional hub with extensive recreational facilities, multiple school districts, and historic sites including the Grooms Tavern Complex and Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve.
