Chugiak is an unincorporated community in the Municipality of Anchorage, situated approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown Anchorage. Located between Eagle River to the south and Eklutna to the north, with Knik Arm to the west and Chugach State Park to the east, Chugiak occupies a strategically positioned area in Alaska's geography.
The area has deep historical roots, having been home to Dena'ina Athabascan peoples for thousands of years before white settlement. The community received its name on February 17, 1947, from pioneering residents, with "Chugiak" believed to derive from a Dena'ina Athabascan word meaning "place of many places." Following World War II, the community experienced significant growth during the 1950s as former military personnel who had served in Alaska established homesteads in the area. Chugiak first appeared on the U.S. Census in 1960 as an unincorporated village and reported again in 1970 before merging with the city of Anchorage in 1975.
Today, Chugiak is home to approximately 10,000 residents, many of whom commute to work in Anchorage or the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. The community serves as one of Anchorage's main suburban expansion sites, with residents primarily spread along the Glenn Highway. Notable features include the Birchwood Shooting and Recreational Park, the largest rifle, pistol, and shotgun range facility in Alaska, where the annual Alaska State Trap and Skeet competitions are held.
