Chili is an unincorporated census-designated place located in the Town of Fremont in Clark County, Wisconsin, situated west-southwest of Marshfield. Today, this small community is home to a post office with ZIP code 54420 and had a population of 205 as of the 2020 census.
The origins of Chili trace back to the late nineteenth century, when the Chicago and North Western Railway expanded through this area of southeastern Clark County around 1880 to serve the region's thriving sawmill industry. A sawmill operated about a mile east of the railroad's Cedarhurst siding, and another significant sawmill was built at what is now Chili, eventually growing into an extensive operation. The community's name arose during the winter of 1881 when railroad officials arrived to designate a name for the developing hamlet. According to local lore, the day was bitterly cold, and rather than leave the warmth of the train, one official reportedly suggested calling the stop Chili because it was so chilly. An alternative account credits the name to the South American country of Chile. The post office at Chili has served the community since 1892, marking an important milestone in its development as a settled place.
