Cherryvale, a city in Montgomery County, Kansas, was founded on land formerly held by the Osage Indians. The town's history began when Abe Eaton became the first white settler to purchase property here, eventually selling it to the Kansas City, Lawrence & Southern Kansas Railroad. The railroad platted the town site in 1871 and named it Cherryvale for its location in the valley of Cherry Creek. The city's early years were marked by tragedy when, between 1871 and 1873, at least eleven people vanished near an inn and general store operated by the Bender family about eight miles northeast of town. After the Benders disappeared in 1873, it was discovered they had apparently murdered numerous travelers, with between eight and eleven bodies discovered buried on their premises. Governor Thomas A. Osborn offered a two-thousand-dollar reward for their capture, but they were never found. That same year, fire destroyed the main part of town, though it was rebuilt. By 1880, Cherryvale was incorporated as a third-class city and later became second-class. Natural gas was discovered in 1889 and oil several years later, both fueling industrial development. Today, Cherryvale serves as headquarters for the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad, a shortline operating over five hundred miles of track across Kansas and Oklahoma. The city, with a population of 2,192 as of the 2020 census, describes itself as the Gateway to Big Hill Lake and continues its role as a regional transportation hub.
