Cabool is a city in Texas County in the Ozarks region of southern Missouri, with a population of 1,946 according to the 2020 census. The city sits at the intersection of US Routes 60 and 63 and Missouri Route 181, positioned conveniently between Mountain Grove to the west, Houston to the northeast, and Willow Springs to the southeast. The city's unique name comes from an 1882 decision to honor Kabul, Afghanistan, using an older English spelling. Local history credits a railroad construction engineer who had also worked in Afghanistan and noticed the similar landscape. Before receiving its distinctive name, the community was known as Cedar Bluff. Cabool remains the only city with this spelling in the entire United States. The area is also rich in local legend, with stories passed down about Chief Kabul and a tragic romance at Cedar Bluff that inspired the 1903 poem Legend of Cabool by Tug Wilson and Ben Durnell. This heritage endures in the local school district, whose yearbook is still called the Kabul in honor of the legendary chief. The Cabool High School campus features historic native rock buildings, with the oldest structures constructed in 1932.
