Buxton is an unincorporated community in Washington County, Oregon, situated near Oregon Route 47. The area was first settled by Henry Buxton Jr. in 1884, with the town taking its name from his family, including his father Henry Buxton, a pioneer who arrived in 1841. A post office was established on December 27, 1886, with Henry T. Buxton serving as the first postmaster. During the early 1900s, Buxton flourished as a thriving community of more than two thousand residents, driven largely by the logging industry and railroad construction. A railroad station on the Portland, Astoria & Pacific Railroad was also located in the area above Mendenhall Creek. A new school building opened around 1938, serving the community for decades until closing in 1998. In 1954, Buxton joined neighboring Manning and Banks to establish the Tri-City Rural Fire Protection District, which later became the Banks Fire District. A modern fire station with locally-milled log exterior construction opened in October 2020 along Highway 26. Today, the community is known for the scenic Buxton Trestle, a 700-foot-long railroad bridge built in 1920 that now serves hikers and bikers as part of the Banks–Vernonia State Trail. The planned 84-mile Salmonberry Trail, running through the Oregon Coast Range, will also pass through Buxton. The region experiences warm, dry summers and has a Mediterranean climate classification.
