Browerville is a small city in Todd County, Minnesota, that has grown modestly over the past two decades. The population was 790 in 2010 and increased to 839 by the 2020 census. The city was platted in 1882 and incorporated in 1884, taking its name from Jacob V. Brower, a conservationist and Todd County official who founded Itasca State Park and established Minnesota's state park system.
The town's early character reflected the region's Irish, German, and Polish heritage, but it also became home to a notable Rusyn farming community in the early twentieth century. These immigrants had migrated west from industrial Pennsylvania cities and established Holy Trinity Greek Catholic Church, known locally as "The Farmer's Church." The parish's history was marked by ecclesiastical tensions, including a 1912 dispute with the newly appointed Greek Catholic bishop and later conflicts between Greek Catholic and Russian Orthodox traditions. The church eventually fell into disuse and was demolished.
Browerville's architectural heritage is preserved in two properties on the National Register of Historic Places: the Kahlert Mercantile Store, constructed in 1883, and the Church of St. Joseph, completed in 1909. More recently, in 1990, the Traditional Catholic Sisters of the Society of Saint Pius X repurposed the former hospital building as their Novitiate, continuing the town's religious significance. The city remains a small community centered along U.S. Highway 71, with a total area of just over one square mile.
