Broken Arrow is a city located in Tulsa and Wagoner counties in northeastern Oklahoma, situated in the state's Green Country region. As the largest suburb of Tulsa, it has grown into the fourth most populous city in Oklahoma, with a population of 113,540 according to the 2020 census. The city is part of the greater Tulsa Metropolitan Area.
The town's history traces back to the Creek Nation. The name Broken Arrow comes from a Creek community in Alabama whose members were forced to relocate to Oklahoma during the Trail of Tears in the 1830s. The Creek founded a new settlement in the Indian Territory and named it after their former home, using the Muscogee word Rekackv, meaning broken arrow.
The modern city of Broken Arrow was established in 1902 when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad sold lots for the town site. William S. Fears, secretary of the Arkansas Valley Town Site Company, selected and named the location, choosing a site about eighteen miles southeast of Tulsa. The railroad was completed through the city in 1903 and remains in operation today under Union Pacific ownership.
For its early decades, Broken Arrow's economy centered on agriculture and coal mining. The city experienced modest growth through the first half of the twentieth century, with a population of only 1,383 in 1907. Significant expansion began in the 1960s after the Broken Arrow Expressway connected the city to downtown Tulsa. The population surged from just over eleven thousand in 1970 to more than fifty thousand by 1990. Today, Broken Arrow boasts a diverse economy and contains the state's third-largest concentration of manufacturers.
