Broadwater is a small village located in southeastern Morrill County, Nebraska, situated less than a mile north of the North Platte River. The village sits along U.S. Route 26, which connects it northwest to Bridgeport, the county seat, and southeast to Oshkosh. Nebraska Highway 92 also passes through the area, following the river valley toward Bridgeport.
The history of the region extends back before Broadwater's establishment. In 1865, the Battle of Rush Creek took place four miles southeast of present-day Broadwater, where Cedar Creek enters the North Platte River. This battle involved U.S. army forces and warriors of the Cheyenne, Lakota Sioux, and Arapaho Indian tribes.
Broadwater itself got its start in 1909 when the railroad was extended to that point. The village was named for General Broadwater, a friend of a railroad official. Since its founding, the village has remained small. According to the 2020 census, the population stood at 95, representing a decline from 128 residents in 2010. The village covers a total area of 0.16 square miles, making it a compact community in the Nebraska Panhandle.
