Brigantine, known locally as The Island, is a city in Atlantic County that sits on Brigantine Island in New Jersey's Atlantic City metropolitan area. Originally incorporated as Brigantine Beach Borough on June 14, 1890, the community has undergone several name changes and re-incorporations throughout its history, becoming the City of Brigantine City in 1897, then East Atlantic City in 1914, before finally settling on its current name as a city in 1924. The borough's name derives from the many shipwrecks in the area, including those of brigantines. The city is accessible only by Route 87, locally known as Brigantine Boulevard, which connects to the mainland via the Justice Vincent S. Haneman Memorial Bridge, constructed in 1972 after the original 1924 bridge was destroyed during the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944. Brigantine borders Atlantic City and Galloway Township. According to the 2020 census, the city's population was 7,716, representing a significant decline from 9,450 in 2010 and 12,594 in 2000.
