Brewster is a village nestled within the town of Southeast in Putnam County, New York, and serves as the principal settlement and most densely populated portion of the county. According to the 2020 census, the village is home to 2,508 residents. The name Brewster originates from two early farmer landowners, Walter and James Brewster, who purchased 134 acres of farmland in 1848 for eight thousand dollars. That same year, recognizing the opportunity presented by the New York and Harlem Railroad's expansion into the area, the Brewsters invited the railroad to build a depot on their property. Large shipments arriving by rail were addressed simply to "Brewster's Station" for lack of a better designation, and this became the source of the village's name, which was eventually shortened to Brewster. Walter Brewster constructed the first new house in the settlement in 1850, which now stands on the New York State and national historic registers as the Walter Brewster House. The village was officially incorporated in 1894, establishing itself as a growing community centered around railroad commerce and development. The Walter Brewster House is currently owned by the Landmark Preservation Society of Southeast, preserving an important piece of local heritage for future generations.
