Bone Gap is a small village in northeastern Edwards County, Illinois, located seven miles northeast of Albion, the county seat. The community has deep historical roots in the region. Before European settlement, the Piankeshaw Indians established a village in a gap within the treeline near present-day Bone Gap. When the first permanent European settlers arrived in 1830, they discovered abundant discarded animal bones left by the Piankeshaw inhabitants, which inspired the settlement's distinctive name.
Early settlers came primarily from northeastern states and included families with surnames such as Rude, Morgan, Knowlton, Phillips, Leach, Gibson, Rice, and Gould. Methodist minister Ebenezer Gould was among them. The developing community became known as Yankeetown. The original settlement, now called Old Bone Gap and located just east of the current village, featured a store, post office, doctor's office, blacksmith shop, Baptist church, and Methodist parsonage. The village of Bone Gap was officially incorporated on March 29, 1892, following a vote of thirty-eight to seven in favor.
Today, Bone Gap remains a modest rural community covering 0.6 square miles. According to the 2020 census, the village had a population of 181 residents, a decline from 246 in 2010. The community is home to Illinois State Route 130, which passes just west of the village. The village has produced at least one notable figure: Cy Warmoth, a pitcher who played for the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Senators, was born in Bone Gap.
