Bern is an unincorporated community located in the southeast corner of Idaho, in Bear Lake County, situated about four miles from Montpelier. The first settlement at Bern was established in 1873 by pioneers who largely hailed from Switzerland, and the community was named in honor of Bern, Switzerland, the native homeland of many early settlers. A post office serving the community was established in 1901 and operated for nearly nine decades until closing in 1988. The population of Bern has fluctuated over time, with an estimated fifty residents in 1909 declining to twenty by 1960. The area experiences a warm-summer mediterranean continental climate, characterized by cold winters and moderate summers. Temperature extremes in Bern have ranged from a high of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, recorded on two separate occasions in July 2002 and 2003, to a low of negative thirty degrees Fahrenheit, documented on two different dates in February 1996 and January 2023. The community is notable as the birthplace of La Monte Young, an American music composer.
