Bellevue is a city in Blaine County, Idaho, nestled in the Wood River Valley about eighteen miles south of the resort towns of Ketchum and Sun Valley. Located on a mile-wide plateau known for its rich soil, the community has grown to a population of 2,560 as of the 2020 census, up from 2,287 in 2010. The Big Wood River flows near downtown, and the city sits just south of Hailey and Friedman Memorial Airport.
The area was first explored by fur trader Alexander Ross in 1824, and Bellevue was officially settled and chartered in 1882. The discovery of nearby mineral deposits transformed it into a thriving mining town. Between 1881 and the silver market crash of 1893, mines including the Keystone, Palmas, Antelope, and Paymaster produced more than sixty million dollars worth of silver, lead, and gold. The community quickly developed with two newspapers, the Bellevue M.E. Church, a lodge, the International Hotel, and a mining smelter. From 1889 to 1895, Bellevue served as the county seat of the short-lived Logan County.
The city's early prosperity was tempered by hardship. A devastating fire destroyed the business district in 1905, started when a bartender at the Seymour Saloon lit a match to investigate a gasoline leak. In 1971, the Wood River Rock Festival took place nearby in Slaughterhouse Gulch, though it was plagued by poor conditions and low attendance. Today, the Bellevue Historic District and the Henry Miller House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving the city's rich heritage.
