Belgium is a village in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, located along Interstate 43 as one of the northernmost communities in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. With a population of 2,421 at the 2020 census, Belgium has deep historical roots shaped by European immigration. Beginning in the 1840s, settlers from Luxembourg arrived in northern Ozaukee County and established several rural communities, including Belgium. The village grew following railroad construction in the late 1800s and incorporated as a village in 1922. Though railroads spurred development, Belgium remained primarily agricultural throughout the twentieth century, with its local cannery serving as the village's largest employer as recently as 2015.
An interesting piece of local history involves a postal service clerical error. In 1857, immigrant settlers submitted the name "Luxembourg" for their community, while Belgian-American settlers in nearby Kewaunee County submitted "Belgium" for theirs. Due to a mix-up, the names were switched, resulting in Belgium becoming a center of Luxembourgish-American settlement rather than Belgian-American.
Today, Belgium maintains strong cultural ties to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Since 1977, the village has been home to the Luxembourg American Cultural Society and Museum, which tells the story of Luxembourg immigration and its impact on America. The Grand Ducal Family has visited the community, and since 1987, Belgium has hosted an annual festival celebrating Luxembourgish food and culture. The cultural center also assists Americans of Luxembourgish ancestry in applying for dual citizenship.
