Bel Air is the county seat of Harford County, Maryland, with a population of 10,661 according to the 2020 census. The town serves as the principal settlement of the Bel Air-Aberdeen urban area, which had a population of 214,647 in 2020, making it the 180th most populous urban area in the United States.
The town's history stretches back to 1780, when Aquilla Scott planned a settlement on land he called Scott's Old Fields. As local merchants and politicians purchased lots, the county commissioners renamed the town Belle Aire, though Scott's deeds shortened it to Bell Aire. By around 1798, court records had further simplified the name to Bel Air. Just two years after its founding in 1780, the town became Harford's county seat in 1782, when Daniel Scott began constructing a courthouse on Main Street. The town initially consisted of only 42 lots along Main Street centered on the courthouse and county jail.
Growth came slowly until after the Civil War, when the canning industry, the Ma & Pa railroad, and related businesses sparked substantial development. Over the following century, the town experienced alternating periods of rapid and slow growth, though Bel Air's role as the governmental and commercial center of the county continued to expand. Since 1980, the town and surrounding suburbs have grown substantially. Today, Bel Air remains the center for governmental, educational, cultural, medical, and commercial institutions throughout Harford County.
