When the Memphis & Ohio Railroad replaced the stagecoach route, Bartlett transitioned into a rail station, and an agricultural community gradually developed around it. The city experienced rapid expansion during Reconstruction, and by 1886 had grown to approximately 300 inhabitants, supported by a school, two gristmills, three churches, and several general stores. Bartlett was officially incorporated on November 1, 1866, under the inaugural mayorship of Bryan Wither, with a population of less than 100 at that time. The city takes its name from Major Gabriel M. Bartlett, a planter and pioneer settler whose homeplace was located on the old Raleigh-Somerville Road at the present location of Bartlett Station Plaza.
