Barrington is a residential town in Bristol County, Rhode Island, located approximately seven miles southeast of Providence. With a population of 17,153 as of the 2020 census, it has grown from its origins as a sparsely developed agricultural community into a suburban residential area.
Founded by Congregationalist separatists from Swansea, Massachusetts, Barrington was incorporated in 1717. The town's boundaries shifted several times in its early history, being ceded from Massachusetts to Rhode Island in 1747, merged into Warren, and then reestablished as a separate town by the Rhode Island legislature in 1770. Early settlers farmed grains including corn, rye, oats, and barley, while many developed orchards for apple cider production, an important trade commodity.
The town's character transformed significantly in the nineteenth century with the arrival of brickmaking companies in the 1850s. Nathaniel Potter founded Nayatt Brick Company in 1847, later reincorporated as the Narragansett Brick Company, which drew French-Canadian workers initially and later Italian immigrants. These industries, combined with the 1855 construction of a railroad to Providence, sparked suburban development. The railroad enabled Providence residents to commute to Barrington while spurring local manufacturing growth. Population surged from 850 in 1850 to 3,697 by 1920. Brick production declined as clay deposits depleted around 1900 and ceased by 1930. Post-World War II suburbanization continued this growth trajectory. Today, Barrington's historical character is preserved through nine sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Allen-West House and O'Bannon Mill.
