Baltic is the village center of Sprague in New London County, Connecticut, with a population of 1,186 according to the 2020 census. The town hall for Sprague is located here. The village grew around industrial development on the Shetucket River, beginning in 1856 when former Rhode Island Governor and Senator William Sprague III purchased land for a cotton mill. After the original A. & W. Sprague Manufacturing Co. mill burned in 1887, Frederick Sayles of Pawtucket built the Baltic Mills Co. cotton mill, which opened in 1899 and became the heart of the community. The mill operated under various owners until finally closing in 1967. The property subsequently housed a mail order operation and other businesses. The Baltic Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, encompasses the entire village and includes 210 contributing structures across 122 acres, reflecting the community's industrial heritage. The district survived significant challenges, including a devastating fire in August 1999 that destroyed most mill remains, and another fire in April 2018. Today, Baltic remains an active community offering recreational opportunities, including the monthly Sprague River Run held from April through October, which features tubing and activities for families. The town is also home to the Academy of the Holy Family, a private Catholic college preparatory school for girls.
