Augusta, a home rule-class city in Bracken County, Kentucky, sits on the southern bank of the Ohio River in the state's northeastern corner. Founded in 1786 by Philip Buckner as a trading post, the city was named after Augusta County, Virginia, and quickly grew to become the county seat when Bracken County was organized in 1796. The county seat remained in Augusta until 1839, when it relocated to Brooksville. The city was formally incorporated by the state assembly in 1850. Located along Kentucky Route 8, Augusta sits just 42 miles northwest of downtown Cincinnati and 19 miles southeast of Maysville, with the Augusta Ferry providing crossings into Ohio. The city experienced significant historical events, including an 1862 Confederate attack led by Colonel Basil W. Duke during the Kentucky Campaign. Today, Augusta is home to approximately 1,096 residents according to the 2020 census. The city's economy includes manufacturing and distillery operations, notably a Berry Global facility producing plastic films and Augusta Distillery, maker of Buckner Kentucky Bourbon.
