Atlanta is an unincorporated community in Elmore County, Idaho, nestled at an elevation of 5,383 feet in the western mountains. Founded in 1864 as a gold and silver mining town, it was named by Southerners who mistakenly believed the Confederacy had won the Battle of Atlanta during the Civil War. Gold discovery came quickly to the region. The John Stanley party found gold on the nearby Yuba River on July 20, 1864, and that November, John Simmons discovered the Atlanta lode containing both gold and silver. Mining activity transformed the town into a growing settlement, with the Monarch Gold and Silver Mining Company and other operations eventually employing around 60 workers and supporting a population that peaked at 500. Through the late 1800s and into the 1900s, various technological improvements enhanced ore recovery, from early stamp mills to the introduction of the Washoe process and later an amalgamation-flotation concentrator. Mining operations ceased in 1953 after nearly ninety years of production. Today, Atlanta survives as a historic community surrounded by the Boise National Forest near the Sawtooth Mountains and the Middle Fork of the Boise River. The ten-acre Atlanta Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, preserves the town's mining heritage through twelve contributing buildings. The community has diversified beyond its mining roots, now supporting tourism, backcountry activities, and cultural offerings including the Atlanta School's summer arts and architecture workshops.
