Atlanta, Georgia's capital and most populous city, began as a railroad terminus in the 1830s. The Georgia General Assembly authorized the Western and Atlantic Railroad in 1836 to connect Savannah's port with the Midwest, and the "zero milepost" was established at what is now Foundry Street in Five Points. The settlement that grew around this location was initially called Terminus, then Thrasherville, and later Marthasville in honor of Governor Wilson Lumpkin's daughter. In 1847, the town was incorporated under the name Atlanta, suggested by the Georgia Railroad's chief engineer as a feminine reference to the Western and Atlantic Railroad.
By 1860, Atlanta's population had reached 9,554, and its position as a railroad hub made it strategically vital during the American Civil War. Following the capture of Chattanooga, the Union Army invaded North Georgia, and the region surrounding Atlanta became the site of major battles. After a four-month siege under General William Tecumseh Sherman, Confederate General John Bell Hood retreated on September 1, 1864, ordering the destruction of public buildings. Mayor James Calhoun surrendered the city the following day. Atlanta was almost entirely burned during Sherman's subsequent March to the Sea.
The city's recovery was remarkable. It became the unofficial capital of the "New South" and a national industrial center. Today, Atlanta stands as the eighth-most populous city in the Southeast and the 36th in the United States, with a 2020 census population of 498,715. The Atlanta metropolitan area encompasses over 6.4 million people, making it the sixth-largest in the nation.
