Ashton is a city in Fremont County, Idaho, with a population of 949 at the 2020 census. The community is part of the Rexburg Micropolitan Statistical Area and is noted for seed potato production, billing itself as the world's largest seed potato growing area.
Ashton's origins trace to 1906, when the Union Pacific Railroad, operating through the Oregon Short Line, decided to build a new railroad town one mile west of Marysville rather than push through the resistant settlement itself. The town was named after William Ashton, the OSL Chief Engineer. The founding of Ashton and the first scheduled train service both occurred in 1906, leading to rapid growth while nearby Marysville declined. Two founding fathers shaped the town's early character: H. G. "Fess" Fuller became Ashton's long-time mayor, while Charles C. Moore went on to become Governor of Idaho.
The Yellowstone Branch railroad, built primarily for passenger service, made Ashton a critical hub. Beautiful stone depots were constructed at Rexburg and West Yellowstone to attract tourists heading to Yellowstone National Park and Old Faithful Inn. During winter, when the railroad north of Ashton remained unplowed except in spring, Ashton became the wintertime rail terminus for the entire region. Beginning in 1910, the town served as the railhead for Jackson Lake Dam construction in Grand Teton National Park. A second railroad branch to Driggs and Victor, completed in 1912, further solidified Ashton's importance as a transportation and commerce center in Eastern Idaho.
