Anna is a village in Shelby County, Ohio, with a population of 1,470 according to the 2020 census. The area has a remarkable geological and cultural history shaped by natural forces and human settlement. Millions of years ago, the prehistoric Teays River flowed through what is now Anna, depositing sediment along the Greenville fault line that would later create a significant earthquake center. According to Native American accounts, the Shawnee leader Tecumseh attempted to forge alliances in the Anna area, but local Shawnee and Miami tribes refused his offers. Legend holds that Tecumseh placed a curse on the land, predicting it would be plagued by earthquakes.
The first white settlers arrived in the 1830s, and the village was officially platted in 1868, named after Anna Thirkield. Anna was incorporated as a village in 1877. The community's troubled relationship with seismic activity became tragically evident on March 9, 1937, when Ohio's largest recorded earthquake struck where the high school and middle school now stand, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale with intensity VIII damage. The shock was felt as far away as Chicago and Toronto. The Lutheran and Methodist Churches suffered heavy damage, the school became a total loss and required rebuilding, and the town hall was so severely damaged that its upper story was condemned and remains unused. Since 1875, the Shelby County area has experienced at least forty earthquakes.
