Angwin is a census-designated place in Napa County, California, with a population of 2,633 according to the 2020 census. Located in the northern San Francisco Bay Area and part of the Pacific time zone, Angwin is best known as the home of Pacific Union College. The community takes its name from Edwin Angwin, a native of St. Agnes, Cornwall, who in 1875 purchased 200 acres within Rancho La Jota on Howell Mountain and established the Angwin Resort. By the early 1900s, Angwin had accumulated nearly 1,600 acres of land in the area. A community emerged to support the resort's success. In 1909, Healdsburg College, a Seventh-day Adventist institution formerly located in Healdsburg, purchased the Angwin Resort for $60,000 and relocated there, becoming Pacific Union College. The Seventh-day Adventist Church has had a significant presence in Angwin; a 1985 news report noted that more than 80 percent of the population belonged to the denomination. Situated within the Howell Mountain AVA, Angwin experiences a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers. Pacific Union College has maintained a weather station since 1940, recording average January temperatures between 37.9 and 52.2 degrees Fahrenheit and annual precipitation averaging 40.60 inches. In August 2020, the community was evacuated due to the Hennessey Fire.
