Amherst is a village in Portage County, Wisconsin, located at the core of the Tomorrow Valley area. According to the 2020 census, the village had a population of 1,117 residents. The name Amherst was established in 1853 by Adam Uline, who named the village after General Jeffery Amherst of Revolutionary fame and because Uline was a native of Amherst, Nova Scotia. The first known settler arrived in 1851 when John F. Hillstrom came to the area, followed closely by John and A. P. Een in August 1852.
Today, Amherst is served by the Tomorrow River School District, which operates all its schools on a single K-12 campus. The village provides residents with fire protection and ambulance service through the Amherst Fire District, police protection through the Portage County Sheriff's Department, a public library, and the Lettie Jensen Community Center. A riverside park along the Tomorrow River offers recreation downtown. The Canadian National Railway main line passes through the village on an elevated grade, and the community connects to U.S. Highway 10.
The Amherst Telephone Company, incorporated in 1903 with capital from 62 local residents, continues to serve Amherst and surrounding communities. The village also features the Amherst Millpond, a 48-acre impoundment on the Tomorrow River that offers fishing for northern pike and panfish.
