Amber is a small town in northern Grady County, Oklahoma, situated about thirty-five miles southwest of Oklahoma City and eight miles north of Chickasha. The town developed in the early 1900s as a railroad community along the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway. When the Frisco rail line was completed in 1903, railroad workers named the settlement Amber after the goldenrod flowers that blanketed the countryside in autumn. That same year, the Amber post office was established. Early development was shaped by W. T. Cloud, who purchased land east of the rail station, dug the town water well, and opened a store, school, and livery barn to serve railroad workers and their families. The community's economy centered on agriculture, with farmers producing cotton, corn, wheat, oats, and alfalfa. By 1908, Amber supported grain elevators, a cotton gin, the Amber Hotel, the Amber State Bank, and various other businesses. Education became important to the community, with Amber School earning distinction as Oklahoma's first consolidated school in 1912. Amber officially incorporated as a town in July 1970. Today, as part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, Amber remains a rural community along State Highway 92, with a 2020 census population of 413 residents.
