Alpha is a small village located in Mastodon Township in Iron County, Michigan, and holds the distinction of being the only incorporated village in the county. The village's origins trace back to the early 1880s when a post office first opened under the name Mastodon on October 1, 1883. This office operated for just over five years before closing in December 1888. The community experienced a revival three decades later when the post office reopened under its current name, Alpha, on December 15, 1913. The following year, in 1914, the community officially incorporated as a village.
Geographically, Alpha covers approximately 0.99 square miles, with most of that area consisting of land. The village is situated in the heart of Iron County's natural landscape, which has long attracted residents to the region. Historically, the area drew people from diverse backgrounds, as evidenced by the varied ancestries found among residents in earlier census records, including Finnish, German, Polish, Italian, and Irish heritage.
Though Alpha's population has fluctuated over the decades, declining from 198 residents in 2000 to 145 in 2010 and further to 126 by 2020, the village continues as an enduring community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Today, Alpha maintains its presence as Iron County's sole incorporated village.
