Accident is a small town in Garrett County, Maryland, with a population of 338 at the 2020 census. The town is known for its distinctive name, which has earned its residents the distinctive label of "Accidental." As one of the early settlements in far western Maryland, Accident carries a colorful origin story. The name likely dates to around 1786, when surveyors Brooke Beall and William Deakins, Jr., friends from Prince George's County, were conducting separate surveys in the area. According to popular lore, Deakins inadvertently claimed land that Beall had already surveyed, and the resulting accident gave the town its name. The area was originally opened for settlement by Lord Baltimore in the early 1770s under the name Monocacy Manor. Beall secured permission to survey 778 acres, with the survey work completed by John Hanson, Jr., who would later serve as a delegate to the Continental Congress and President of the United States in Congress Assembled. The land was officially granted to William Deakins by patent in 1786, and the following year, the surrounding countryside was divided into military lots as compensation for soldiers who served from Maryland during the American Revolutionary War. Located in the plateau region of the Appalachian Mountains, Accident remains a modest community connected to the broader region primarily through U.S. Route 219, which runs through Main Street and links the town to Interstate 68 and connections toward Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and other Maryland communities.
